Sri Lankan vice-captain Mahela Jayawardena scored the fourth fastest hundred in Cricket World Cup history to star in his team’s comprehensive 210 run win over Canada at the Mahinda Rajapakse International Stadium in Hambantota on Sunday.
Sri Lanka batted first and posted a massive 332 for 7 in its 50 overs and then bowled out Canada for 122 in 36.5 overs.
Earlier, Jayawardena (100: 81b, 9×4, 1×6) and captain Kumar Sangakkara (92: 87b, 7×4, 1×6) shared a 179 run stand to give Sri Lanka the foundation for a massive total. Opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (50: 59b, 8×4) was the other major contributor to the total.
For Canada, Harvir Singh Baidwan (2-59), John Davison (2-56) were the best bowlers on view.
The chase never really took off for Canada as Thisara Perera (3-16) and Nuwan Kulasekara (3-24) struck at regular intervals to derail Canada’s chase.
Rizwan Cheema (37) and skipper Ashish Bagai (22) were the only two batsmen to offer any resistance.
