On this day
Nepal grabbed the ICC World Cricket Division 4 title defeating United States of America (USA) by 8 wickets in the final on September 10,2012.
There were numerous records created by Nepali players in that tournament which includes Shakti Gauchan’s most economical figures in One Day cricket and Basanta Regmi’s 21 wickets in a single tournament, the most by a Nepalese player in any tournamnet.
Also, Nepal remained unbeaten through-out the tournament winning all six matches. The only time it has happened for in any tournament.
Both openers Subash Khakurel and Anil Mandal scored centuries. It was one of the most convincing tournament wins for Nepal, indeed it was the best cricket played by Nepal Cricket Team in a 50 over tournament.
Lets Recall some spectacular performance by Nepalese players in the tournament.
Shakti Gauchan (10-8-3-2):The most economic spell ever.
Shakti Gauchan created a record outside test playing nations in a 50 over game claiming 3 for 2 in his quota of 10 overs against Malaysia. His extraordinary figures included 8 maidens and a economy rate of 0.3 runs per over. This helped Nepal restrict Malaysia for just 69 runs. Later Nepal chased the target without losing a wicket in the 13th over.Shakti Gauchan rolling his arms." width="697" height="960" />
Subash Khakurel’s 115
Subash Khakurel’s 115 against USA from 142 balls was the fourth century by a Nepali batsman in international cricket. This is also the highest run scored by a Nepali batsman in international cricket. His innings of 115 runs helped Nepal post 258 runs on the board and Nepal won the match by 32 runs thanks to a five wicket haul from Basanta Regmi. Khakurel scored a total of 208 runs in 6 matches with an average of 52 and was the significant factor for Nepal to win the tournament.Subash Khakurel on his way to century against USA." width="960" height="676" />
Anil Mandal matches Subash toe to toe
It was a tournament worth recalling for often criticized Nepali openers as another opener Anil Mandal too scored a century, the 5th century for Nepal in international cricket the very next match after Subash Khakurel. His 113 aganst Denmark consisted 8 fours and 4 sixes that helped Nepal get a promotion to ICC World Cricket league Division 3. He was only behind Subash in most runs scored list with 186 runs to his name.
He has been serving the country with his left-arm spin since a decade and it has not been a single tournament that the “crisis man'” has not made his presence count. He was phenomenal in the tournament picking 21 wickets in 6 matches, a record for wickets in a single tournament. His both five-wicket hauls came against USA. His economy rate of 2.80 was outstanding and he was awarded the best bowler of the tournament
This was the first title for Nepal under Coach Pubudu Dassanayeke and a beginning of new cricket era in Senior Cricket as well.
