England’s limited over skipper, Eoin Morgan has retired from international cricket, The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Tuesday.
Morgan is England’s leading run-scorer and most-capped player in both white-ball formats, and the only man to lead the team to an ODI World Cup success. The southpaw notched up 7701 runs in ODI and 2458 runs in T20I from 248 and 115 matches respectively. Moreover, Morgan has played 16 Test matches for England and scored 700 runs, with a couple of centuries.
Morgan led England 126 times in ODIs and 72 times in T20Is since being named Alastair Cook’s replacement in 2015, which is noted as England’s crisis period in limited over. The 35-year-old captained England Men to their first-ever ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup victory at Lord’s in 2019 during his 13-year international career with England. He was also part of the England team that clinched the 2010 T20 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies.
“After careful deliberation and consideration, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect,” Morgan said in an ECB release. “To call time on what has been without a doubt the most enjoyable and rewarding chapter of my career hasn’t been an easy decision, but I believe now is the right time to do so, both for me, personally, and for both England white-ball sides I have led to this point”.
Despite starting his career for Ireland in 2006, Morgan switched allegiance in 2009. He’ll continue to compete at the domestic level, leading London Spirit in the Hundred later this summer.
